In the Beginning
How often have you read the beginning words of Genesis?
How often have you skimmed through the creation story, enjoying the flow of the familiar storyline, and anticipating the rest of the story?
Our modern culture is information-rich. We have learned to scan quickly, looking for salient information, and letting the rest lie fallow.
The ancient interpreters paid close attention to every single word in the written Word of God. They treated the entire text—and the God who inspired it—with a reverence that we would do well to emulate.
I am not a Hebrew scholar, but I am drawn to the image-rich nature of the Hebrew language. And there are many Bible study tools that allow non-Hebrew readers to understand the original texts at a deeper level.
Some things don’t easily translate into English, and all translations are predicated on the worldview of those who do the translating. We can only language that which we have experienced and understand, yet the opening chapters of Genesis are filled with events and concepts that are seemingly incomprehensible.
The following reflections are an exploration of some of the gems in Genesis One that are hidden in plain sight.
